In this week’s episode, we are diving into Matthew 6:12 where Jesus teaches us in his model prayer to ask God to “forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” This portion of the Lord’s Prayer contains a critical message about the importance of forgiveness in our marriages.
In Matthew 6:11, Jesus teaches us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Like bread, God’s Word and prayer are meant to be our spiritual nourishment each day for thriving marriages.
In Matthew 6:10, Jesus teaches us to pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” As Christians, these should be the ultimate goals of our prayers – for God’s perfect will and rule to shape everything on earth.
When Jesus’ disciples asked Him how they should pray, He responded by teaching them what we now call the Lord’s Prayer. This powerful model prayer provides key principles for deepening our connection with God through prayer.
Our prayer must not be self-centered. It must arise not only because we feel our own need as a burden we must lay upon God, but also because we are so bound up in love for our fellow men that we feel their need acutely as our own. To make intercession for men is the most powerful and practical way in which we can express our love for them. – John Calvin
Are we really finding the time to spend with the Lord, and letting God sit with us in that heart space, and revealing things to Him and have him reveal things to us? In a world filled with constant noise and distractions, finding moments of true connection with God can be difficult. Yet, as we look at Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 6, we are reminded of the importance of pausing and seeking His presence.
