Remaining Connected to the True Vine
As we continue through week 27 of our Marriage After God devotional series, we want to encourage you with a truth that has deeply impacted our own marriage: apart from Christ, we can do nothing.
In John 15, Jesus tells His disciples to “abide” in Him. That word abide means to remain, stay connected, and dwell closely with Him. Just like a branch depends on the vine for nourishment and life, we as believers depend completely on Jesus for strength, wisdom, peace, and spiritual fruitfulness.
This is especially true in marriage.
If we’re honest, there are many times we try to find fulfillment outside of Christ. When we feel hurt, discouraged, stressed, lonely, frustrated, or exhausted, we often run to temporary comforts instead of running to God. Sometimes we expect our spouse to fulfill needs that only Christ can satisfy. Other times we turn to distractions like entertainment, social media, work, food, or simply checking out emotionally.
But Jesus lovingly reminds us that true life is found in Him.
Abiding Through God’s Word
One of the most important ways we abide in Christ is by spending daily time in God’s Word. Psalm 119 paints such a beautiful picture of the goodness and necessity of Scripture. God’s Word strengthens us, convicts us, guides us, and transforms the way we think and live.
When we fill our hearts with truth, that truth begins to overflow into our marriages and families.
We’ve experienced firsthand how powerful it is when a husband and wife prioritize God’s Word together. It doesn’t have to look perfect or complicated. What matters is building rhythms that keep Christ at the center of your home.
And as parents, we have an opportunity to show our children where our foundation comes from. When they see us turning to Scripture in every season—whether we’re facing hardship, conflict, joy, or uncertainty—they begin to understand that God’s Word is trustworthy and life-giving.
Growing Closer to God Through Prayer
Prayer is another essential part of abiding in Christ. Prayer is more than bringing requests before God—it’s communion with Him. It’s learning to unveil our hearts before Him honestly and invite Him into every part of our lives and marriages.
Throughout our years of marriage, prayer has continually brought us back to unity, humility, and dependence on God. When we stop praying, we notice the difference quickly. But when we seek the Lord together, He strengthens and steadies us in ways we could never accomplish on our own.
God desires for us to seek Him. He wants us to come boldly before Him, trusting that He hears us and cares deeply for us.
Relying on the Holy Spirit
We also talked in this episode about the importance of relying on the Holy Spirit. Loving your spouse well is impossible in your own strength. Walking in patience, gentleness, forgiveness, and selflessness requires the power of God working in you.
The beautiful thing is that God never asks us to do these things alone. Through His Spirit, He gives us everything we need for life and godliness.
And when God convicts us, disciplines us, or prunes areas of our lives, it’s not because He’s against us—it’s because He loves us and wants us to bear more fruit.
A Marriage That Reflects Christ
A marriage after God is not about perfection. It’s about two imperfect people continually returning to Jesus together.
As you reflect on your own marriage this week, ask yourselves: Are we abiding in Christ? Are we staying close to Him? Are we allowing His Word, His Spirit, and His love to shape the way we live and love?
The closer we remain to Jesus, the more our lives and marriages will reflect Him.
