The Enemy Wants Us To Believe “We” Are The Enemy

We were driving to church. We weren’t fighting, but the tension was thick, residue from an argument that took place earlier in the morning. My husband reached his hand out for mine and started to pray.
Halfway through his prayer he asked God,

Please remove the enemy from our home.”

In that moment I had a feeling and thought that I was the enemy. I don’t know where it came from other than hearing it in my mind. I figured I was the problem this morning and that it would have been easier if I was just removed.

Terrible thought, right?!

But it was a manipulative play by THE enemy!

Shortly after we said “Amen!” my husband squeezed my hand and then he said,

You’re not the enemy.” Followed by a few more tight squeezes. (That is his way of letting me know he is there for me and that he really cares for me.)

I actually couldn’t believe he said that, right after I had those insecure thoughts flood my mind. He had no idea.

I laughed under my breath. Then I told him how much his words impacted me.

As you prayed, you asked God to remove the enemy from our home, and I thought in that moment that I was the enemy.”

He didn’t hesitate to respond,

The enemy wants us to believe that we are the enemy.”

It is so true! The enemy does what he can to pit us against each other. Sometimes we do the work for him by letting our flesh get in the way. And he always takes advantage of the opportunity to whisper insecure phrases for our weak hearts to absorb. He’s nasty like that. If we are not on guard, we will start to believe his lies.

My husband is not the enemy.

I am not the enemy.

But, we do have a real enemy and he hates us. He hates our marriage. He will take advantage of us in our weak moments to infiltrate with his lies.

I am NOT the enemy.

You are NOT the enemy.

The devil is our enemy and he is seeking someone, some marriage to devour.

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
