12 Marriage Devotional: The Armor of God

In marriage, we face a very real spiritual battle every single day. And sometimes, it can feel like our spouse is the enemy. But the truth is, Scripture reminds us that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood” (Ephesians 6:12). Our battle is spiritual—and God has equipped us with everything we need to stand firm together in marriage.

In Ephesians 6:10–18, Paul gives us a powerful and practical teaching on the Armor of God. This armor is not symbolic imagination—it is spiritual reality. God did not leave us unprotected; He gave us His strength, His truth, and His righteousness so that our marriages would endure.

The Belt of Truth

Truth stabilizes us. Without truth, we stumble emotionally, spiritually, and relationally. Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). When we cling to truth:

  • Lies lose their power
  • Condemnation fades
  • Unity grows stronger

Truth binds us together instead of tearing us apart.

The Breastplate of Righteousness

We cannot earn righteousness on our own. Scripture says, “None is righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10). Our protection comes through Christ’s righteousness—received by faith, not performance (Philippians 3:9). And because we belong to Him, we now practice righteousness daily. This protects our hearts from compromise and spiritual danger.

Shoes Fitted With the Gospel of Peace

Chaos and fear cripple marriages. But the Gospel brings peace—real peace that Jesus Himself gives (John 14:27). When our hearts rest in Christ:

  • We respond with gentleness
  • We pursue peace—not strife
  • Our home becomes a refuge

The Shield of Faith

Faith extinguishes the enemy’s lies. Doubt, fear, accusation, offense—all lose power when we stand firm in Christ. Our faith doesn’t rest in our strength but in His.

The Helmet of Salvation

What we believe determines how we live. Salvation guards our minds from deception and discouragement. We continually remind ourselves:

  • We are loved
  • We are redeemed
  • We belong to Christ

The Sword of the Spirit

Our only offensive weapon is the Word of God. Even Jesus fought temptation with Scripture. When lies come, we speak truth.

And Over It All—Prayer

Prayer humbles us, unites us, and strengthens us. It keeps Christ at the center of our marriage.

How The Armor Blesses Marriage

When we put on the Armor of God:

  • We protect unity
  • We resist temptation
  • We encourage each other in truth
  • We fight the real enemy—not each other

Every single day is a spiritual call to action.

This Week’s Challenge

This week, talk with your spouse about each piece of armor. Pray together. Encourage one another. Stand firm in Christ.
