I use to believe that other people, level of education, wealth, having a nice car or clothes or the ability to travel, how I served in church, and all the ways I could bless or benefit others…I thought these things are what defined my worth. I thought my husband defined my worth and I sought my worth in him. I convinced myself that my value came from what I could produce or earn. I believed that my worth was established by my own strength or ability.
Then is this also how I viewed or calculated the worth of others?
This breaks my heart and it must break God’s heart too. If I believe my worth is derived, than I must believe that about others. And what I believe, motivates my actions and how I treat others. And yet this is the standard of truth for many people. That worth is derived.
What I have learned in my relationship with God, the mighty Creator, is that He determines my worth, nothing else. God defines my worth. And God defines your worth.
We don’t have to earn it or fight for it or beg for it or pray for it or gain it.
We are valuable because God says so throughout His love story shared with us in scriptures.
I am worth more than I will ever know and you are too. We only need to search His Word to see.
I am worth….
I am worth being created with intricate detail, knit together to make me unique.I am worth being fearfully made. I am worth being known. I am worth having a purpose.
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. – Psalm 139:13-16
I am worth being alive. I am worth being saved and rescued. I am worth being loved.
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. – Ephesians 2:4-9
I am worth being cared for. I am worth more than all the other animals, creatures and plants that God provides for. I am worth being encouraged.
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. – Matthew 6:25-34
I am worth being adopted. I am worth having family.
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. – Romans 8:14-17
I hope this encourages you today. Reject the lies that you are unworthy or that your value must be derived. You are worth so much more than you know, but you can know the truth if you search God’s Word!
