The Art Of Being A Wife: Interview With Barbara Rainey

barbara-rainey-interviewI had the honor of interviewing Barbara Rainey, Co-Founder of Family Life and author of her new book Letters To My Daughters: The Art Of Being A Wife.

I am still reading through Barbara’s new book and as soon as I finish I will do a full review on it. In the meantime, I wanted to bless you with an interview I did with her where she gives insight into her book and some wise marriage encouragement. If you don’t have time to watch the full interview I wrote out some quotes for you that I thought were very powerful!

Barbara mentions that…

You can’t have a relationship with someone you don’t know.”

She continues by explaining that you get to know God by reading His Word, the Bible. And when you do this, she says…

Your prayer life will be more meaningful, because you will know who you are talking to.”

My message on Unveiled Wife is something I say over and over again which is the truth that intimacy means to become familiar with or know someone. To have an intimate relationship with God means that you are getting to know Him. Experiencing intimacy in marriage means that a husband and wife are pursuing knowing each other through many different ways. Get to know God and watch how it impacts your prayer life.art-of-being-a-wife

I asked Barbara to share her motivation for sharing such beautiful graphics throughout her book, this is part of her response…

God uniquely picked you for your husband and he uniquely picked me for my husband. There are things in my life and things in his life that God wants to bring together to paint a picture – which is why I use all these art illustrations in the book – He is painting a picture with the two of us that is going to be different than the picture He is painting with you and your husband. He wants all of our marriages to reflect a picture of who God is to the culture and to the world that is watching.

Referring to Ephesians 2:10,

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Barbara says,

the word workmanship means work of art…and God is the master artist!”

I asked Barbara to explain more about the format of the book and the marriage topics she tackles. Her heart is to help wives and encourage them on their journey of marriage no matter what season of life they are in!

I am hoping to elevate the view of marriage. Women in your generation and even in my generation, we have all been so harmed by divorce, whether we have experienced it or not. It has cast a bit of appall about marriage, and we all are a bit skeptical about marriage, a little weary of marriage, we are just not sure about the concept anymore in our country, and I’m hoping to lift that veil and say look at what God is doing! Expect Him to do great things, expect Him to work in your life, view your marriage as a work of art and allow God to do what only He can do to make something beautiful out of it.”

I shared a quote from her book which is pictured here…transparency

This is what she had to say about the importance of being unveiled and transparent in marriage…

If you are going to be one, you can’t have divisions, you can’t have walls between you. You have to have openness in order to have oneness, and the only way to have openness is to have transparency.

Hiding feels safer, keeping a matter close to myself feels safer than opening myself up to my husband and letting him see what I really feel. I mean, what if he rejects me? What if he thinks less of me? What if he so disagrees with me that we go in different directions? There is always risk involved in being transparent, but when you are transparent because you are following God’s call for marriage there is greater hope that that transparency will build oneness.”

This was a great interview and I know you will be encouraged by it!
