3 Things To Remember When Life Makes Unexpected Turns

Within the past few months I’ve had several friends lose their jobs. In this already extremely crappy job market we’re in, this is considered a catastrophe (seriously, everyone should be grateful just to have a job even if it’s not your dream.) I’m pretty sure all of us have experienced those moments in life where you’re faithfully following God only for something completely unexpected to slap you in face and cause you to look in the sky and ask, “Why!? What’s this all about?”
I’m currently in that season and if you’ve never had that moment, keep living. When it comes to staying faithful and joyful in the face of difficult times we have a choice to either complain or seek what He’s trying to show us. We have a choice to stay focused on God and seek what He’s trying to show us or stay focused on self and throw a spiritual tantrum. You know what I mean? “I don’t feel like reading my Bible today…I’m still upset. I don’t feel like encouraging others or praying right now, I’m still hurting.”
Husbands, we’ve got to understand that how we respond to adversity is key because not only are people watching, your wife is watching. When things get tough financially, when there’s difficulty within your marriage, when health issues plague a loved one or yourself, when family tragedies occur, when things at work seem bleak, or when you lose your job try to remember these 3 things to encourage yourself and your wife with.

  1. He is Able

Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me? – Jeremiah 32:27

There’s a song I love called “Switch Me Up” by Dre Murray and he says “I know a God that can level any level that you’re facing. The creator that your heart’s been chasing, the living water from the basin. My God is amazing.”

  2. He Has a Plan

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. – Jeremiah 29:11

God allows things to happen because He sees more than what we see.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. – Isaiah 55:8-9

  3. He Cares

Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins?…Do not fear…you are of more value than many sparrows. – Luke 12:6-7

Think about that. As huge as God is He takes the time to tell us that He values us. You and me. Imperfect, selfish, childish, selfish human beings. He values us enough to know the details of the hairs on our heads and finds us precious. Not only is He aware, but He truly cares.

Trust me, I need to take this advice myself, but I hope you’re encouraged as you’re in the midst of your trial.
